Notable Facts & Analysis
🦠
The defining COVID trade scandal: On January 24, 2020, the Senate Health Committee held a closed briefing on COVID-19. In the days and weeks that followed, Loeffler's household disclosed 27 sell transactions totaling $1.275M–$3.1M, and purchased Citrix (a telework company that surged during the pandemic). The trades were first reported by The Daily Beast.
🏦
NYSE connection: Loeffler's husband, Jeffrey Sprecher, is the CEO of Intercontinental Exchange — the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange. The $18.7M in ICE stock sold in February–March 2020 made the case especially stark given the obvious conflict of interest.
⚖️
Investigation closed — no charges: The DOJ announced in May 2020 that it had ended its investigation into Loeffler, Feinstein, and Inhofe without charges. Loeffler's defense was that trades were made by independent investment managers without her involvement.
🏈
WNBA ownership controversy: Loeffler co-owned the Atlanta Dream WNBA team. When she opposed the Black Lives Matter movement during her Senate tenure, players across the league wore shirts supporting her opponent Raphael Warnock. She lost the runoff election in January 2021.
Background

Kelly Loeffler served as U.S. Senator from Georgia for approximately one year (January 2020 – January 2021) after being appointed by Governor Brian Kemp to fill the vacancy created by Johnny Isakson's retirement. She was one of the wealthiest members of Congress during her brief tenure.

Before entering politics, she was CEO of Bakkt (a cryptocurrency platform subsidiary of ICE) and an executive at Intercontinental Exchange. Her husband Jeffrey Sprecher is ICE's founder and CEO. She lost her January 2021 runoff election to Democrat Raphael Warnock.
