Notable Facts & Analysis

112% outperformance vs S&P 500: A 2026 ProCap Insights analysis found Khanna's family trust trades produced 112% excess returns above the S&P 500 from Jan 2024 to Apr 2026 β€” surpassing even Nancy Pelosi's 38.5% over the same period.

The hypocrisy argument: Khanna is one of Congress's most vocal advocates for banning congressional stock trading. Critics have labeled him "Trader Ro," pointing to his family trust β€” managed by his wife Ritu without his direct involvement, per his office.

CHIPS Act architect: Khanna authored the Endless Frontier Act, which formed the basis of the CHIPS and Science Act signed by Biden. He represents California's 17th District β€” the heart of Silicon Valley β€” and sits on the Armed Services and Oversight committees.
Background

Rohit "Ro" Khanna (born September 13, 1976) has represented California's 17th Congressional District since 2017 after defeating eight-term incumbent Mike Honda. A Democrat and self-described "progressive capitalist," Khanna was born in Philadelphia to Indian immigrant parents.

He holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Chicago and a J.D. from Yale, and previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce under Obama. Before Congress, he lectured in economics at Stanford University.

Khanna is running for reelection in 2026 and faces a challenger partly motivated by the stock trading controversy.
