Notable Facts & Analysis
🏦
Wall Street background: Before entering politics, Toomey worked as a derivatives trader at Chemical Bank and Morgan Grenfell in New York and Hong Kong β€” making him one of the most financially sophisticated members to serve on the Senate Banking Committee, where he later sat as senior Republican.
πŸ”«
Cross-party gun control vote: Toomey co-authored the bipartisan Manchin-Toomey bill (2013) that would have expanded background checks for gun sales β€” a rare break from the GOP. Despite this, he maintained a 90%+ American Conservative Union rating throughout his career.
🏳️
Voted to convict Trump: One of only seven Republican senators to vote to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial (2021). He announced his retirement in October 2020, ending a 12-year Senate career in January 2023.
Background

Patrick Joseph Toomey Jr. (born November 17, 1961 in Providence, RI) served as U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania from 2011 to 2023 after three terms in the House (1999–2005) representing PA-15. He graduated from Harvard College in 1984 and worked in financial services before opening a restaurant chain in Pennsylvania.

He served as president of the Club for Growth from 2005–2009 before successfully running for Senate. Known for fiscal conservatism and financial expertise, he did not seek reelection in 2022, honoring his personal term-limit philosophy.
